Tuck away in the relatively peaceful and safe sanctuary of Singapore, the conflict and unrest that is happening around the world are often irrelevant. Glimpse of images & reports from the news are the only reminder we had. All these seem so distanced while we continue in our relentless pursue for the seemly, unimportant, financial struggle of a city dweller.

On Feb 11, I had the opportunity to document a demonstration organized by Amnesty London in Trafalgar Square. It was a peaceful demonstration in support of those protesting against repression throughout the Middle East & North Africa. The determination of the people were evident. Not surprisingly, majority of the demonstrators were Syrians, many of whom were directly affected by the ongoing conflicts.

Such demonstrations are often perceived collectively in the mainstream media. The focus is often on the obvious agenda. Coming from a place where protest and demonstration are rarely heard of, I am interested in getting to know more about the individuals that participated in such events and the stories behind them. Such mass movement could only be made possible when individuals decided that they had enough and wanted change. These stories are often powerful and cannot be undermined.

Portraiture-The Selected Images.

The lens restriction that we had previously were removed and we were given the freehand to fully express ourselves in this portraiture assignment, which also meant i could finally work with colors. The challenges then is about the approach in getting up-close and personal with a person you barely know. You will need to take control of the situation, giving your subject the artistic direction and hopefully you get a shot that truly reflect his/her personality. To sum it up, this assignment will definitely put your technical knowledge and interpersonal skill to test.

Together with 2 other photographers, Valentina & Diogo, we decided to head out to the street of London looking for people with distinct features and personalities. It requires a great deal of confident to approach a stranger and asking for 20 mins of their time to do a portrait. In such freezing weather, i was expecting lots of rejection but surprisingly, the 3 persons that i've approached were kind enough to say yes. I had a great time shooting these lovely individuals with different personality and background. It's amazing how someone who you barely know could so warmly welcome you into the 20 mins of their lives. These are the images selected for the critique session and i am so glad that i have made the right decision this time round.

With a bit of time on hand, 3 of us decided to visit the National Portrait Gallery to look for "inspiration". And look what the lovely, Valentina, got for both of us.

There are so much we could learn from each other while working in a group, and most importantly, the companies really make this whole assignment so much more enjoyable. :) I will definitely be looking forward to more of such session. :)

Human Relationship-The Selected Images.

Last week assignment was about Human Relationship. We were given the task to capture a single image that expressed the emotion between 2 persons with the same lens and control restriction. I had a tough time getting contacts and finding a suitable subject for this assignment. So i thought, "why not start from the street, it shouldn't be that difficult looking for love on the street of London?!" Well, I am so wrong. It took me 3 days of endless walking looking for couples expressing their love in public. I had a few shots of couples holding hands and that is it, there is really nothing much going on.

After hours of walking in the freezing weather on the last day, I began to head back toward Waterloo station thinking i will have nothing for the upcoming critic session. Then out of the blue, a couple appeared right in front of me, oblivious to the rest of the world, their expression were priceless. Then, i knew i got the shot.

Compared to the rest of my group, i've done pretty badly this time round. I should have been more resourceful in the search for my subject rather than looking randomly on the street. After all, this is the kind of assignment set out to test our resourcefulness. Well, another good lesson learnt for me.

Street Photography-The Selected Images.

Since we were told to shoot in raw, i just couldn't resist the temptation to post-process. After all, raw formats were made to be used as digital negative for post processing and I would really like to see how far i could push the editing boundaries in photojournalism. What used to be acceptable in wedding photography, may not exactly be suitable in my currently course work and i might have gone a little too far this time round. Also like the problem i had with the pervious assignment, my choices for the selected images weren't as good as i thought. I was told there are better images that i have totally overlooked. Shooting is tough, but selecting the most representative image is equally as difficult, i definitely have much to work on.

Through this street photography assignment, I've realized that i am such a goal oriented

photographer, it is tough for me to just wander around aimlessly, the "Cartier Bresson" moment is just not going to happen. Therefore, I have decided to have a little theme of my own. I've set to capture the little moment of human interaction that exist within a certain location, namely The Park, The Bus Stop and The Traffic Junction. The challenge then was to be able to blend into the crowd and not arouse any unwanted suspicion. It is all about getting the most candid and natural shot of people without them noticing. And i may have done it simply by staying in these location for so long that no one seem to be bothered with me anymore.

These are the selections for the critique session and pardon the "Spielberg" kind of editing... though that is exactly how i've perceived the images to be, i've pushed it a little too far... a good lesson learnt today... Cheers!! :)

Days after Christmas...

I find it really tough walking the street, almost aimlessly, looking for anything interesting without knowing what to expect. Perhaps that explained why street photography has never been my cup of tea. And that is exactly what our next assignment is about.

Not surprisingly, it once again took me out of my comfort zone and challenge the norm of my usual photography approach. After 2 days on the street and hundreds of images later, only less than a handful i am barely satisfied with. It's going to be another long day on the road tomorrow. Not sure if it's just me, but the assignment seem to be more challenging each time.. interesting!!

No festive new year mood here, just a few discarded Christmas trees and the bitter winter cold while i am walking down the street... Happy Lunar New Year Everyone!!! :)

Critique session is often brutal and nerve-racking, but not this one, we had a really fruitful and interesting session with Patrick Sutherland, one of the 3 experienced tutors that will be guiding our work closely during this MA programme. Through his wealth of experience and honest feedback, he has broaden my perspective on photojournalism and the kind of work expected from a photojournalist.

Although these images might be lacking the much needed visual impact, it is still very much part of my learning experience. So do check it out while i continue to work on it... :)

People at Work...

People at Work, the subject for my 1st assignment. We have to document 3 different individuals at work with a single image that tells it all. All modern day commodities of a digital SLR were stripped off from us. The image has to be shot with either a 35 or 50mm on a 35mm camera in black & white. It has to be on manual exposure with manual focusing and ISO set at 400. It's back to the very basis of what the camera could do with the photographer playing an ever important role.

Photographing people should be my forte, but this time, it's different. I have to conceptualize the type of image i wanted and most importantly, source for the subjects, the actual people at work. My 1st phone call to a yoga centre was shot down because the owner, is out of town, and the staff couldn't get the permission i badly needed in time, just my luck. Being relatively new to the country, I thought why not focus on something closer, someone that i have crossed path with on a daily basis. The hawkers at a small and random market across the junction of Wimbledon station, is an obvious choice.

I took a rather direct approach by introducing myself to the stall owners, explaining what i'm doing. They were extremely friendly and kind to allow me to hang around documenting their life. I spent most of the first half talking to them, finding out who they were rather than on the actual shoot, which i eventually realize its importance, especially for the process of getting the shot, that one single image.

The actual shooting itself is a bit of a disaster. The manual focusing on a 5D proved to be a challenge, and the focus ring on the 50mm is not exactly smooth. It does not make it any easier with an almost constant moving subject. But what all these restriction does really, is to allow more thought into making the photographs. More time were spent looking through the viewfinder, getting the setting right and waiting for the right moment before the trigger is squeezed.

In total, I spent 2 days working on this assignment. The first day was spent entirely at the market with 2 of my subjects, Michael & Dan, the grandfather and grandson duo working on their fruit stall that has been around for 45 years, and Shane, the fishmonger from Hasting, working from his van that also double up as his portable stall. Both of them are extremely popular with the locals. My 3rd subject, i thought, has to be different or at least someone working indoor with a skilled trade. Thus, day 2 were spent walking the street looking for a suitable candidate, till i met Houro, a young Kurdish tailor from Syria.

(Not part of the assignment, but a good way to break the ice with a portrait.)

Houro, a skilled tailor, works in a rather modern looking tailor shop along Wimbledon Broadway, a perfect fit for the assignment. He is extremely welcoming and we had some really interesting conversation. I am starting to enjoy the whole process of meeting new people, learning about their cultures and listening to their stories. Something that i will be doing very often from now on..

A day of sharing...

The first assignment was given to us and already I am facing some tough challenges. It's about documenting, with a single image of "People at Work" and we were given some strict guidelines to conform to. A big change in my normal workflow and as a wedding photographer, I never had problem gaining access to my subjects. So being new to the country and having to source for contacts and getting permission to shoot is a bit of a tricky situation. Though, I have some ideas in mind, let's just hope that it will turn out well. *Finger Crossed*

Yesterday, we had an amazing day of portfolio introduction with photographers sharing their work and experiences. And there are some really impressive images coming from the class. It is really an eye opener for someone who are so conformed to the Singapore system, and it really does awaken my creative platelets.

Day 1 at LCC...

It was the 1st day of school and we were given tons of information to digest. Had a great time meeting like minded photographers from all over the world. And it is really refreshing to look at photography from a totally different perspective. Really looking forward to the coming months of lectures, and of course, the many challenging assignments.

I was told it will be good to have a blog documenting our learning journey through this MA programme, it shouldn't be a problem for me because that is what i've been doing since the day I became a wedding photographer. So, like always, do stay tune on my journey ahead!! :)

From the Street of London...

I have to compile a slideshow of 10-20 images for a self introduction session this coming Thursday. It has to be a representation of my work and style, afterall it going to be the first impression I am making to the class.

Since most of my fellow classmates are either experienced photojournalist or news photographer, I am sure it is going to be an interesting day for me, coming from a totally different photography background. :)

Anyway, here are some of the photos taken earlier during our walkabout around the neighbourbood and city.

Right at our doorstep, with the tight parking space, I will be an expert in parallel parking by the end of the year..

Missed the twilight hour again. It is tough getting it right here. Still at the end of the horizon, you could see the amazing

overview of the city.

Benches right outside London College of Communication, UAL. Going to be there pretty often in the coming months...

Of course, some touristy pics of the London Eye and Big Ben. :)

Our London walkabout with Evo...

Ok, I do not want to sound too overly excited about it, but we brought Evo out today. Taking the train and underground tube system through town, without a flinch from anyone. The only look we had were smiles and an old lady commenting how gorgeous Evo was in his "Burberry" coat. It is a world different from where I am from, Singapore.

Despite being 1st world, we are lacking way behind in our Animal Welfare policy. The senseless mass culling of the "Punggol Strays" clearly demonstrate the latter. It is sad to see that there are a growing sense of anger among Singaporeans, from the influx of foreign talents to the MRT saga and now the Punggol Strays. Clearly, been fast and efficient is not always the answer. So are we falling victims to our own high standard of efficiency?!

It's a glorious Sunday morning and the weather is bitterly cold. Though, my thoughts seem to be flowing more smoothly in the wee hour of the morning, i am going stop the rambling now. Enjoy the photographs. :)

It's more than tennis, it's Wimbledon...

It's a no brainer decision in the choice of our new place. The estates in Wimbledon has so much charm and character, it is hard for us to resist. It is also convenient for both of us in our daily commute to work and school.

Right at our doorstep, is an amazing view of the city, but I missed the sunrise this morning. The light was stunningly amazing

when i was walking Evo yesterday. Such a pity, i do not have my camera then.

Our new home, a quiet and serene estate at the edge of Wimbledon Village.

Wimbledon Windmill Museum, about 5 mins drive from our place.

Wimbledon Common, right next to the Windmill Museum, where dogs mingle, joggers run and trekkers walk... absolutely beautiful!

And yes, there is going to be plenty of tennis balls for Evo...

Our adventure begins...

Since photojournalism is about documenting life and it's happening, i shall kick start it with a little photo diary of my own, a documentation of my journey as a photojournalist and the adventure of a Singaporean living aboard. It's not going to be all weddings from now on!! :)

Here the latest of what's goes on. The 3rd member of our family has arrived!!

This is where all pets traveling abroad are collected in London. It's located somewhere near Heathrow Terminal 4.

It's all about the paperwork.

Unfortunately, Evo, our Jack Russell, arrived on the busiest day in the Animal Reception Centre history. Hundreds of cats & dogs were waiting to be processed on this very day. Discovery Channel were also there doing a documentary about animals traveling aboard.

Hundreds of anxious pet owners awaiting the arrival of their cats & pooches. We waited for more than 5 hours before our name are called.

And finally Evo arrived in London. Despite the hectic schedule of having to clear the hundreds of animals, the staff at the centre took really good care of them. Evo was fed and even bathed before he is handed over to us.

A Super Duper New Year!!!

2011 has been a great year for us at LRDP...

I am extremely pleased to announce that through my portfolio as a wedding photographer, i have been accepted and offered a place in the University of the Arts, London to pursue my postgraduate studies in Photojournalism.

After 5 years as a wedding photographer, it is really time for me to explore the true meaning of Photojournalism. My work in wedding photography have touched the lives of the couples i photographed. It is now time for me to seek a larger audience and challenge myself out of my comfort zone.

2012 will be a brand new and exciting year for us. We will be moving our base to London and in celebration of our big move, we will be offering a super attractive package for Prewedding in London. The Ricoh GRDIV...

I've been thinking of getting a "serious compact" camera for awhile now...

and as a DSLR user of both Canon 5d MK1 & MK2, i am used to getting excellent quality pictures.... So when it come to a compact camera there is no exception... it has to at least match the capability of a DSLR...

I have been doing a fair bit of traveling and will be traveling even more in the coming months... Having a DSLR is definitely useful... but the weight and bulkiness just turn me off (it's just reminds me of work) :P... so i decided to get a smaller camera...

Leica is way out of the question with its astronomical price tag... So the next best thing is the Ricoh flagship camera, GRD4... With a fast 28mm len of f1.9... the GRD4 is able to handle situation that even a DSLR may find it challenging.. n yes... it may not have the dynamic range of the bigger sensor camera... but image quality this compact produced is rather pleasing..

Of course there are better camera out there... but i am happy with the Ricoh GR Digital4...

at least for now!! :)

Gavin & Ashley Wedding Xpresshighlight...

It had been a long & exhausting day... having to churn out the Xpresshighlight within that few hours is never easy... n having it done just in time to get to the hotel... there was really no time for a break... As stressful as it may be... it is rewarding to know that your work is much appreciated and well received by the couple and audiences.. :) It is also a pleasure working with Gavin & Ashley... a motivating factor to push myself further to the limit... :)

However, it is not all smooth sailing though... i was rather disappointed that the person controlling the laptop during the screening of the Xpresshighlight decided to skip the opening page and end credit of the video... It is not the lost of advertising opportunity that i am upset with but rather the due credit an artist deserved for the every effort he had put in to create that very masterpiece... So a lesson learned.. from the "School of Hardknock"... always give clear instruction to have it play from beginning to the end...

Nevertheless, I am glad that we were able to meet the couple expectation... n like i always said, working with such lovely people just make your job so much more enjoyable... :)

No amount of efforts was spared in this wedding... The bride, Hazel attention to details are highly commendable... like the designing of her gatecrashing "Hazeypedia" and even the Angbao box was handmade into a luggage bag to match the theme of the wedding dinner... Samuel & his band of brothers also spare no chance by arriving in a "hot pink" tee with bermudas, a cute blend of attires matching with the bridesmaids... a truly fun and lively wedding day to document... :)

It had been a long and exhausting day.... Having to wake up at abt 3am in the morning is never easy for people like us because that is usually the time i go to bed.. :)

As tiring as it may be, the satisfaction is greater to be able to successfully document this beautiful union of 2 lovely people, Samuel & Hazel... As they said, "the early bird gets the worm", we were rewarded with beautiful lights and plenty of time for a little shootout in Marina Barrage... :)

I almost forget about these set of photos that we had taken before our wedding day...

With a bit of spare time on hand, i thought it would be good to share with you guys the little shootout we had around a tree... :)

With our very own tailored secondary school uniform and a trusty tripod, we headed down to Seletar Reservoir where one of Singapore most beautiful tree stands... One of these photograph was also used for our beautifully customized and designed wedding invitation card... :)

I first met Celine in one of our couple, Daniel & Yiqin wedding... Then she was the bridesmaid for our beautiful bride, Yiqin... This time round, it's finally her turn to put on the wedding gown... and i am so honored to be the one documenting this lovely day... :)

It has been a while since we last shot a wedding with gatecrashing (lucky for us) :P.. Kim and his band of brothers had a hard time getting through... With no game plan.. it was with plenty sweat and endurance that Kim finally met his gorgeous bride...

Oh... Did i mention that i also met our November Couple, Jason & Veronica in this wedding?! :) It is no small world... they are actually from the same circle of friends... it is through such words of mouth that we are able to come this far... n i am so thankful to couples who have recommended our services to their friends.. :)

3 years ago, I was the photographer for Gregory & Jennifer wedding..

and 3 years on, it was finally the turn for his brother, Roy & Jae to tie the knot.

I'm extremely honored to once again be chosen to photograph this joyous occasion. There were lots of familiar faces, and it's so exciting to hear that there is a new addition to Gregory & Jennifer family... Congratulation Guys!! :)

Like i have always say, nothing beats being around nice people. I'm sure i enjoyed myself shooting this wedding.. :) So for the lovely couple, Roy & Jae and all the beautiful people i met.. here are the highlights from the wedding day...

This is a way overdue post...

but till.. i need to get it up for the undoubtedly kind and lovely couple...

Adrian & Wenhui had a wedding that started early in the morning.. but with no gatecrashing.. there was an oasis of calmness in the air, everything just went perfectly smooth. :) We even had plenty of time for a photoshoot at Marina Barrage... Their dinner reception was held at Goodwood Park Hotel... with a simple flow of events... no fuss no complexity.. just the way how all wedding should be... :)

Having to wake up in the wee hour of the morning... it was supposed to be a tiring start.. but surprising... i was so awake and energized and that was because my body is still working on London time.. i guess being jet lagged has it own benefit too.. :)

We had a blast shooting yesterday wedding... Good companies and good weather.. all the elements we needed to have fun in a wedding... Though we didn't manage to get to Marina Barrage in time for sunrise... we were able to get a little glimpse of the beautiful morning ray... good for me because no one would want to disappoint such a sweet and lovely couple..

I am back!!! :) n still feeling the effect of Jet Lag...

my body is still operating on UK time... there is really no day or night for me now!! I guess it is gonna take awhile to adapt.. :)

Btw... the weather is killing me... r we having a heatwave crisis in Singapore?!..

Anyway.. for my very much neglected blog... here are some photos taken during one of our road trip to Stonehenge... It is about an hr drive from where we were staying... didnt really manage to get those "postcard" kind of photo because it was really crowded on a weekend... the cordon area is so wide that a close up shot is only possible with zoom lens... and that is really not my thing... so i guess if u wanna shoot nice photos.. going really early on a weekday with a good zoom lens would be better... but i must say driving through the scenic countryside and stopping over for a meal at one of their many "pit stop" along the highway is really an experience.. n would i do it again?! hell ya!!!.. :)

Here is why image editing is essential and time consuming...

On the left.. we have the straight out-of-camera raw photo... and on the right is our final product after 45 minutes of editing in photoshop... Now.. tell me which you prefer?!.. :)

No doubt that photo editing will always be an important part of our workflow.... though tedious... it is also where all the fun begins... translation beautiful moments into images of art that would last a lifetime... :)

We are back!!! Recharged and Ready to go!! :)

So sorry for the lack of updates for the past 1 month...It was during that period, that i got myself a wife :P and went for a little honeymoon in Maldives. :) Gosh, i miss that place already!!! :P

As we proceed to the 2nd half of the year, most of our hot dates are already being booked. How i wish i could shoot 2 wedding at one go... we sincerely apologize to those couples we have rejected. As we will be doing a fair bit of travelling for next half of the year, please do enquire early if you are interested in our photography services for your wedding day... only limited slot available!! :)

Being a photographer himself, Bryan was worried that the sun might be too glaring for me to shoot... No doubt that such lighting condition is slightly challenging... but with abit of photoshop tweeting... the glare frm the sun really creates a nice effect... :)

Had a blast shooting the wedding of Shawn & Adelyn... A cosy dinner setting held in Suburbia, Sentosa... a beautiful solemnization ceremony presided by the ever popular Mr Simon Sim... it was the 3rd time in a row that i met him... very nice guy!! :) Though it was a super long day for the couple... with minor hiccup here and there... Shawn & Adelyn pulled it through really well... :)

The weather was crazily stormy yesterday morning... but with the blessing from the lovely couple, Bryan and Elun... the sky finally cleared up right before the arrival of the groom... phew!!.. at least i could stay dry for the rest of the day.. :P

Elun had one of those sweet little smile that radiated throughout the day... definitely makes my job so much easier... :) n Bryan is also a photographer with exceptional talent in photo editing... I only realized that he is a photographer when he told me he actually edited his own pre-wedding photos... n they are really good!! :)

A Reunion of Old Pals... Wedding of Andrew & Su Ann.

Early last year, Su Ann, a classmate of mine from my early biomedical days, approached me thru facebook enquiring about my services. I knew then that this is gonna be a wedding with many familiar faces... And indeed it was like a mini reunion... many were surprise that i am even shooting photos now... hmm.. but i thought i always have that creative vibe in school... :P nevertheless... it was truly an honor to be engaged by Su Ann and her lovely husband Andrew... :)

It felt like it was only yesterday when i was cracking over what to write for the last post of the year.. and that was for 2009...

This year... 2010 was a special one for me... a life changing one.. :) It might not be a good year for the wedding industry... but i am just thankful that i am still able to survive in this very saturated market... many have come and go...

I would credit this to all our super supportive couples and "fans" who have been there for us through the years...

I could not be any more grateful for what i have... and i am ever more ready for what is ahead for me... So 2011 here i come!!! :)

It has been a busy week for me... the hectic schedule of shooting, editing and also the crazy preparation for our grand move in... i just hope that i have more than a 24 hrs day...

I felt really bad that i couldn't deliver out album for couples before christmas... not just because of the mountain load of backlogs that i am facing but also partly due to the heavy workload of my trusted album maker... their turnaround time is super long for this peak season..*sweat*

I am just glad that most of my couples are understanding.. For one such couple.... Patrick and Valen.. i am grateful for their kind patience... both of them have been really wonderful :)

One Early Morning...

This was one of those early Teochew wedding... but lucky for me... i wasn't needed till 6am... :) The challenge of shooting such an early wedding is all about the lights... i really need to make full use of all available light source to get that image... big challenge comes great satisfaction... :) n that is what make it fun!!

Albums out!!... & i could finally slow down my pace slightly...

i was going through some of past couples slideshow... (yes, i do watch them over n over again) i realized that there are lots of changes over the years... it may be good in a way but still... nothing beats what i set out to do when i first started out in wedding photography... that is to capture the beautiful images thru my heart... it shldn't be complicated...

There maybe lots of distraction in between... lots of desire to create that winning shot... i just need to "Focus"... like i say... its nothing complicated... its simply photos of people in love & people we love!!

This is one wedding that i won't miss for anything in the world....

Not because of anything else... but simply the friendship that have been forged between myself and the super lovely couple, Chris & Claire... :)

Knowing that they will check out my blog periodically... here is a little teaser into the beautiful ceremony....

On 09/09/2010... we opened the door to our new home.... :)

Super Duper Auspicious day!! Huat ah!! :P

While i am slogging through the heavy load of backlogs... here is a sneak peek into our new house..

We will be doing some major makeover.... i wonder how it will turn out?! :)

We Got the Keys!!! :)

Today marked an important day for both of us....

Amidst the crowded counter in HDB hub.... we eagerly waited for our no. to be called...

n finally... we got the keys.... the keys to our very own love nest!!! Sweet!!!

Couldn't wait for that auspicious day to come soon....

Till then... we are just gonna hold on to the keys!! :)

Reminiscence - Hong Kong Style...

For those who have been following my blog.... you might remember one of my 2009 couple, Andy & Emily...

here is a wedding that brings back memony... :)

I thought something was really familiar when Gabriel, a Singaporean came to see me about his wedding... He came alone... and told me the bride, Angela was in Hong Kong... (exactly like how i met Andy alone while Emily was in Hong Kong) now that is interesting... i told myself... haha.. i just did a "similar"wedding not long ago.. :P

It was until the wedding day that i met one of the bridesmaid, Renee, ah... so that's the link!! she was the bridesmaid for Emily too... :) the world isn't that small afterall... thanks for the recommendation, Renee!! :)

So long story short.... many moon later... i am finally done with the images... :)

Specially for the lovely couple Gabriel & Angela and all the beautiful people i met...
